Synopsis
"Seven Valleys" is a captivating historical drama series that delves into the rich tapestry of a community instrumental in Australia's Industrial Revolution. Spanning from 1810 to 1945, the series intricately weaves the lives of the wealthy and the working class, highlighting their shared experiences of joy, tragedy, and love.
Season 1 (1810 - 1867):
"The Great Crossing, Darwin and Tweed"
The series begins with the early exploration and establishment of the region. Key figures like William Cox, Thomas Archer, and Charles Darwin make significant contributions, while Andrew Brown's flour mill at Cooerwull marks the start of industrial progress. Amidst the backdrop of murder, building, and weaving, Caroline Collit's ghostly presence haunts the road near Rosedale, and the woollen mills transition to tweed manufacturing.
Season 2 (1868 - 1891):
“Black Gold, Beer, Clay and Railways”
As the community expands, Thomas Brown's property becomes a centre for iron making, and feminist teacher Belle Golding starts a school. The era witnesses the emergence of breweries, pottery and rail, with James Silcock making the first pots at Lithgow Pottery. The industrial boom continues with Bracey’s department store and the Lithgow Co-Operative Society, as characters face the challenges and opportunities of these new industries.
Season 3 (1892 - 1920):
“Iron, Politics and the Town That Built Sydney"
The region's impact is seen through its iron industry and social conflicts, key events like William Sandford's blast furnace and the Portland Cement Works. The railway to Newnes emphasises the significance of oil shale. Joseph Cook, a former coal miner, becomes Prime Minister, offering a working-class perspective. The Lithgow riot underscores tensions while constructing the "Wenvoe" mansion, illustrating wealth disparity.
Season 4 (1920 - 1945):
"Riots, Guns and a New Prime Minister"
This season highlights the community's resilience amid wartime challenges and celebrates cultural expression through theatre. The Mortlock Family's management of the Steel Works at Eskbank House exemplifies the link between industry and family legacy. The Small Arms Factory, employing 6,000 workers, including women for the first time, marked a significant shift in societal norms and underscored women's critical roles during the war.
